In the Joseon Dynasty, a single record by a historian angered the king and led to the deaths of many people. Just one line of writing triggered a historical tragedy.
Historians were responsible for recording the king’s actions exactly as they happened. However, in 1498, while compiling King Seongjong’s chronicles, a problem arose. The issue was a piece of writing called Jouije-mun by Kim Jong-jik. This text subtly criticized King Sejo’s seizure of the throne. When King Yeonsangun discovered it, he was enraged, believing it insulted his grandfather. He then began purging his officials.
This event is known as the Muosahwa.
King Yeonsangun accused Kim Jong-jik and many scholars of treason, executing or exiling them. As historical records became political weapons, historians in Joseon became too afraid to write freely.
This shows how even a single sentence in history can change everything. One line of writing provoked the king’s wrath, leading to great loss and raising serious concerns about the historian’s role and the importance of keeping records.
History has shown us that a small piece of writing can lead to major events. Without records, we cannot learn from the past. That’s why accurately preserving and protecting history is so important even today!
